Seal Watching

Puffin Boat Tours
Queen Ann's Bay
Victoria, Nova Scotia

These animals are enormous, lazily basking in the rocks.  As if turning their heads snobbishly away from me, they plunge into the water.  Most of them would bob their heads in and out of the water.  As though they were playing hide and go seek with us.  "Take my picture!... Oh no, just kidding!"

I've never seen seals before in their natural home.  If only I could touch them.  As we rode the boat, I raise my face to the wind and welcomed its cold touch on my skin.  It probably helped that we were the spoiled little brats, having a private tour, with the entire boat to ourselves.  Okay, we're not brats.  The clouds are heavily thick that day, just a few hours before, the rain was so strong, it felt like a hurricane.  Many people cancelled their tour leaving the entire boat to only 4 tourist and 2 guides. We moved from one seat to another, trying to get the best view possible.  Then there was a little balcony an the end of the boat where I could safely stand, raise my arms in the air and just embrace the winds.

There is a certain pleasure I could not explain every time I look at my husband busily taking photos with his phone.  I don't think he realizes how handsome he looks, his face very kind and gentle.  "Thank you,"  I whisper every now and then unable to get over how incredibly blessed I am.  Every site, every feeling, sends a thrill in my veins.  I get silent moments of reverie, never imagined I would come this far nor would I ever experience things like this.

One day I was a little girl with no care, content with my little space in the world.  Then life did what it does best - I had to grow up.   Sometimes life showers blossoms of happy times, often it shoots sharp arrows straight to the heart.  Decisions had to be toiled upon and life lived with consequences.  I had visions of what I want my life to be but did not have the slightest idea how I could get there or if it's even possible.  But having our only True God as a best friend and cleaving to him, having faith and courage, life is better than whatever I imagined it to be.

No Angry Fire

The Citadel, Historic Site
Halifax, Nova Scotia

To the townspeople of old Halifax, these flags used to convey messages:  For one, the name of the ship coming to port and it's cargo as well as ships that are leaving.  Family members of sailors watch these flags eagerly to signal the return of their loved ones.  It will also sound out the warning in case there is an invasion.  Thankfully, there never was.   No Angry Fire was ever shot in the Citadel of Halifax, it's formidable walls deterred would be conquerors.  All we have is a blank shot to demonstrate the artillery, for the amusement of curious tourists {like me}.

A few days ago, I was catching up on Amazing Race Canada, I've missed a few episodes but confident that I can watch the recordings.  In one of the episodes, the contestants had to spot the site of the next clue by looking for the red-and-yellow flag.  Guess where the flag was?  Of course, on one of these flag masts at the Citadel.  For an infrequent traveler {we were in Halifax just a few weeks ago}, it is quite a nice feeling:   watching a show on TV and excitedly exclaiming, "I've been there!"  Won't you agree?

The Citizen Soldier | Public Gardens, Halifax

The Citizen Soldier fountain, a statue erected as a memorial for the Boer War, is found at the Public Gardens in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  It is situated in a little pond amid a weeping tree (Weeping European Beech tree) and elm (Camperdown Elm) that provides a lot of shade.  I think it's a perfect spot to bring a book with, some tea and enjoy precious quiet time.  The sound of the water is very soothing.  Often, there would be a lovely birds bathing in the water.  A nice sight.

Chocolate Lake | Armdale Nova Scotia

We stayed at Best Western Hotel in Armdale, Nova Scotia for our weekend trip to see the Busker's Festival in Halifax last weekend.  Behind the hotel is this really beautiful lake: perfect for a picnic or a delightful swimming afternoon with family and friends .  During our visit, the sun shone so brightly, the waters reflected the blue skies. Sun worshipers enjoyed the heat here and get some tan.

It's named Chocolate Lake because of a chocolate factory that was situated along it's banks years ago. This lake is man made and surrounded by many private homes {lucky them, lol...}  It is also the home of a city beach where local families enjoy the water and the sun, life guards are stationed for safety and water quality is tested weekly.  There are no lifeguards on the Best Western side of the lake, hence the swim at your own risk sign :-)

Public Gardens | Halifax, NS

Welcome to the Public Gardens in Halifax, Nova Scotia

We strolled the lovely pathways of a beautiful botanical garden in Halifax this past weekend.  "Is that the time already?" two and a half hours went by so fast.  No wonder my heels were aching now but my eyes were feasting at the greenery and beauty of the garden.

We were headed for the Harbourfront the day before, 'Lola' our GPS {yeah we named her}, led the way downtown.  As we tried to find our way, I caught a glimpse of a small entry way: "Public Gardens."  We were very well intrigued so we made sure we didn't miss it the next day.  And there we were.

"Not all those who wander are lost."

Fine weather, good friends,
great food from undiscovered places,
great experience from unexpected things,
such are the past weekend's adventures.
