It was a warm day yet it feels cold because of the wind that was blowing relentlessly. Then when the clouds became too heavy that afternoon, it let go some of it's weight and showered some cool, refreshing raindrops on us. Ah, for the n'th time, dear Gayle would wittingly say "We are not that sweet that we would melt." She would chuckle and give me a wink. "Right?" she would ask, "Right!" was my affirmation with a thumbs up. Dear, lovely Gayle has Alzheimer's disease.
Every time I visit my friend Gayle, we would walk along Jones Lake, a lovely lake very close by where she lives. It is serene, very peaceful and the greenery is very soothing. People walking along the lake exchange greetings as they pass by. Seldom would you meet someone who won't be generous with a smile. Gayle, in her younger years had three hunting dogs she took care off with her husband. She would fondly remember them, although her stories are on the repeat, her passion is as amusing as the first time. As we walk along the lake, she would stop and greet every person. If they have a dog, she would get her 'dog-fix'. What lovely conversations ensue from a little pat and stroke of the pretty dogs' fur. It amazes me too how people can be so pleasant and patient even when they notice things in the conversation constantly revolve. There is a lot of good in this world.
From movies and tv shows I've watched, I had the idea that people with Alzheimer's disease often gets frustrated and harsh. Happily disappointed, Gayle is ever so sweet. Frustrated, yes, but never harsh. I can't imagine how hard it is to be "forgetting" all the time, things that you know really matters, people that you once loved... and still love. "You will have your time, but I do not wish this upon you," She said one day. It brought me to tears many times. I can't help but imagine what it would be like to be where she is now. There's a certain good in that empathy, it encourages me to treat her the way I would like to be treated. With love and time, we learn to cope, be more understanding... and also build a wall to shield from frustration in case of the Ferris wheel of repeat stories. "I hope not," is all I could pray for as I drift into my "daydreams..."
"All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you,
you also must do to them."
~Matthew 7:12
Quite a blessing that Gayle has a very loving son and daughter-in-law who takes care of her ever so well. "If he does not drop in every day, he would phone." Gayle speaks the truth. How lovingly she is taken cared of by her family and friends contribute to her fine well being. She is given the dignity that befits her crown of gray hair. But above all else, I think it is her faith in God that keeps her strong and hopeful. Why, she has the hope of someday returning to her youthful vigor and beauty! That is a blessing that God promises to her in the Bible and she keeps that deep in her heart. (Revelation 21:4; Titus 1:2 and Job 33:25)

The last antique shop we visited was Michael Carbyn Antiques.
As we walked through the door, we were greeted by the owner, Mr Carbyn. Gayle fondly greeted back saying, "I was scared to walk in, afraid that you would keep me." Mr Carbyn laughed heartily and replied, "Oh no, I don't think you are old enough."
They have a lot of very pretty, interesting pieces of furniture, crockery and jewelry. I can't help but imagine what might have been the story behind each of these pieces ~ gifted by an appreciative, generous friend, maybe? Or one special girl long time ago saved her hard-earned money to buy that piece she really loved? Then it was passed on from mother to daughter then to grand daughter...the piece travels from one history to another. Oh I fancy that thought, like a time traveler living many lives and retaining sweet memories of each one. This is one of the things I day-dream about.
This lovely tea cup caught my eye, I love that it's yellow and that it has roses. I don't have a yellow tea cup in my collection yet. Hence, this is a beautiful addition indeed. What do you think of it?
The tea cup and saucer set will always remind me of Gayle and our walk together to visit antique shops. It may not be expensive yet it's story will make it very memorable and precious indeed. What story? We'll who knows? Yet now starts anew. As the days pass by maybe this yellow tea cup will gather new memories. Like it traveled to another time, another place... another story...
You might have guessed, I would like to be a time traveler one day, lol.
How about you? If you have any super powers, what would it be?

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that, yes, it is a dreadful disease. Very challenging indeed. I hope that you are able cope, I pray endurance for you and your family that you may keep your joy in times of distress.
DeleteMaya, What a lovely friend you are to Gayle. The company is appreciated whether remembered or not. Sylvia D.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sylvia. You are very kind :-)
DeleteMy late mother had alzheimer's and I know at one point if we went out shopping she'd grab my arm and ask me not to leave her. Her fear was not being able to find her way to the front of the store and out again. You are a good friend to Gayle and I know how much patience you probably have now, and will need in the future.
ReplyDeleteAs for your new teacup - love it! I don't have a yellow one yet either and think you will enjoy the yellow roses of your new Colclough.
Thank you for linking to Mosaic Monday Maya.
Thank you Judith, thank you for the link up and the very kind comment. You know, Gayle does that too... fortunately, we always find our way home :-)
DeleteLove the soft yellow colour of your new teacup! And it's even more special because it reminds you of your friend Gayle.
