Very Versatile Layered Flower Brooch | Free Crochet Pattern

Very Versatile is not an overstatement.  Fasten a scarf, liven up your outfit, decorate a purse... a hat... or add it to a gift wrap (or give it as a fabulous gift!), even to accessorize a headband... - this layered petals flower brooch is a do-all pin!

Wouldn't you agree that a brooch really help fasten that nice scarf together?  Not only that, you can make twists and turns and wear your scarf any way possible if you have a nice pin to hold it in place.  Of course, that nice pin should be big enough to hold a thicker fabric together - such as the Star Stitch Hoodie Capelet (Free Pattern available here too.)

Best of all, this brooch is really easy to crochet (an excellent scraps buster too!)... Please read on and check out this free pattern.  Kindly feel free to share this pattern with your friends by linking to this blog.  And you may also leave comments in the end, that would be super awesome {wink}
Please read through the entirety of the pattern first to get familiar with it before starting to crochet.  This will enable you to get familiar with the pattern and allow for you to work more smoothly.

You will need:

Worsted weight yarn, color of your choice
I used Red Heart Super Saver.
You may combine colors or use one solid color... yup! your choice.

H - 5.0 mm hook
2.25 inch kilt pin
A fancy button
Thread that is similar in color as your main yarn (to sew in button)
Needle for sewing

Tapestry needle

Notes:
You may change color every other row to add dimension and more fizaz to your flower brooch.

Abbreviations:
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
WS - Wrong Side (back of flower)
RS - Right Side (front of flower)

Instructions:
Chain 5, slip stitch together to form a ring.

1. Chain 4 (This is 1 dc plus chain 2)
(dc, chain 2) in the ring 6 times
slip stitch into the second chain of the beginning chain-4
= You will have: 7 dc and 7 chain 2 spaces

2.  Chain 1
(On the same chain-2 space do a shell stitch: sc, chain 1, 5 dc, ch 1, sc) repeat this 5 times.

Note: It is nice to have 5 petals on the first layer of the flower.  Hence, do the shell on only 5 ch-2 spaces by skipping the 3rd and 6th ch-2 space. Make the sc between shells a little tighter than usual to make your petals more rounded.

After the 5th shell, turn your work.
On the WS, insert hook on post, draw up a loop and slip stitch.

3. Working on the WS, chain 4
(Front post dc into the next post and chain 2) repeat on all 6 posts.
Sl St into the second chain of the beginning chain 4.
    Chain 1 and turn work.
(You will have 7 posts and 7 ch-2 spaces)

4.  Now, you will be crocheting the second layer of petals.

Note: If desired, color change can be made at this point.
Working on the RS, (sc, ch1, 6dc, ch1, sc) on the same chain space. Repeat this on all 7 ch-2 spaces.  You will have 7 petals.
After the 7th shell, turn work. On the WS, insert hook on post, draw up a loop and slip stitch.

5.  Working on the WS, chain 5
(Front post dc into the next post and chain 3) repeat on remaining 6 posts.
Sl St into the second chain of the beginning chain 5.
    Chain 1 and turn work.

6.  Now, you will be crocheting the third layer of petals.
If desired, color change can be made at this point.
Working on the RS, (sc, ch1, 7dc, ch1, sc) on the same chain-3 space. Repeat this on all 7 ch-3 spaces.  You will have 7 petals.

*If you are happy with three layers, you may turn your work after the 7th shell. On the WS, insert hook on post, draw up a loop and slip stitch.  Fasten off.

**Otherwise, you may proceed to the 4th layer of petals.

7. Repeat instruction #5

8. Repeat instruction #6.  Fasten off and weave all ends using a tapestry needle.

9. Using a needle and a similar color thread, sew the button into the middle of the flower.
Attach the kilt pin on the back of the flower.

Back of the flower brooch:
Work in rounds, place a stitch marker on the first stitch of each round to help you keep track of your stitches.

Round 1.
Starting with an adjustable loop (aka: magic ring), single crochet 5 times in the loop. Tighten the ring. (You will have 5 sc)

Round 2.
2 sc on each stitch around (You will have 10 sc)

Round 3.
(2 sc on the next stitch, 1 sc on next) around (You will have 15 sc)

Round 4.
(2 sc on the next stitch, 1 sc on the next 2 stitches) around. (You will have 20 sc)

Round 5.
a. Pull out the yarn about a few inches loose and remove hook.
b. Place the round inside the kilt pin on the back of your flower, with the head of the kilt pin just after the last finished stitch.
c. Insert the yarn through the space on the head of the pin (from inside of the pin head to out) and slip stitch using your fingers.  Repeat on the other side of the kilt pin head.
d. Replace hook and slip stitch on the following 10 stitches.
e. Repeat a-c, this time on the bottom hole of the pin.
f. Continue to slip stitch on the following 10 stitches.

(**Middle picture for demo only - for added security, I tied the kilt pin into the back of the flower using the ends of the flower.  Then I placed the backing on top of the inside part of the kilt pin before doing instruction #5.)

Cut yarn - leave a long tail for sewing the round you just made into the flower.
Sew the round into the base of the last round of petals and fasten off.

And you are done!  Go ahead and enjoy your new flower brooch.
